ObD Annual Awards Luncheon Jan. 26

City of Omaha Planning Director Steve Jensen upon receipt of the 2007 Laurels award at last year’s luncheon.
Omaha by Design will host its second annual awards luncheon Monday, Jan. 26. The event will be held at The Omaha Building, 1650 Farnam St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The 2008 recipient of the Laurels award will be announced at the luncheon, and the 2008 recipients of Omaha by Design’s trio of awards – the Green Leaf, Civic Leaf and Neighborhood Leaf – will be recognized.
The Laurels award, Omaha by Design’s highest honor, is presented to an individual, organization or business for significant contributions to great public spaces in the City of Omaha. Past recipients include Omaha Planning Director Steve Jensen, Mayor Mike Fahey and Gary Gates.
The 2008 Green Leaf – which honors an individual, organization or business that has worked to preserve and enhance the metropolitan area’s natural setting and public park system – was presented to The Gallup Organization for the creation of a native meadow on the front lawn of its riverfront campus.
The 2008 Civic Leaf – which honors an individual, organization or business that has worked to define and improve the metropolitan area’s civic places and public image – was presented to Metropolitan Community College (MCC), Omaha Public Library and Metro Area Transit for the development of MCC’s South Omaha Campus Connector.
The 2008 Neighborhood Leaf – which honors an individual, organization or business that has worked to preserve and enhance the metropolitan area’s residential neighborhoods – was presented to the Community Bicycle Shop Omaha, whose mission is to provide a positive environment for learning the basics of bicycle mechanics, to repair and distribute pre-owned bicycles, to build community, and to promote cycling and safe riding.
