Environment Omaha Advisory Committees to Meet
February 01, 2009
Members of the five local advisory committees formed to help create Environment Omaha will have the opportunity to interact with one another at a meeting set for Thursday, Feb. 26.
The initiative, which calls for the development of an Environmental Element for Omaha’s master plan, is addressing the sustainability of the city in a comprehensive manner by focusing on five major goal areas: the natural environment, urban form and transportation, building construction, resource conservation and community health. Each goal area will be dealt with consecutively over an 18- to 24-month period.
The Feb. 26 meeting, set for 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the W.H. Thompson Alumni Center on the UNO campus, is an opportunity for all committee members to meet the leadership team and each other, learn about the process, and discuss the relationship and connections between the five goal areas, said Connie Spellman, director of Omaha by Design.
Work on the natural environment goal area is well under way. The next meeting of the Natural Environment Advisory Committee is set for Friday, March 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Henry Doorly Zoo.
The public can keep tabs on the development of the natural environment and all goal areas via www.environmentomaha.com. The project’s leadership team encourages Omahans to visit the site, review the information, and leave their questions and comments, Spellman noted.
Omaha by Design serves as the project manager for Environment Omaha. The initiative is funded by the City of Omaha’s Stormwater Management Plan Program Grant, the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency and the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District. Communications support is provided by HDR.
