Neighborhood Grant Programs Under Way
February 01, 2009
Mayor Mike Fahey and Mutual of Omaha have launched their respective neighborhood grant programs for 2009. The details are below.
2009 Mayor’s Neighborhood Grant Program
Neighborhood associations can apply for grants in two categories: neighborhood improvement and crime prevention. To apply, a neighborhood association must be registered and listed in the City of Omaha’s Neighborhood Association Directory. The application deadline is Friday, March 20, and grant awardees will be announced the week of April 20. The 2009 grant pool is $80,000.
Neighborhood improvement grant applications should focus on public space improvement and innovative programming that strengthens neighborhood involvement and quality of life issues. Crime prevention grant applications should focus on community involvement to reduce crime and improve public safety. Associations may apply for one or both grants. The maximum request amount is $5,000, so if associations apply for both grants, the combined total can’t exceed $5,000.
Bonus points will be given to neighborhood groups that have participated in a Place Game workshop led by Omaha by Design. The Place Game is an organized way of brainstorming improvements to any neighborhood by listening to the people who use its public spaces. Omaha by Design conducts Place Game workshops free of charge from March through October. For more information or to schedule a workshop in 2009, contact Teresa Gleason at 402.554.4011 or teresa@omahabydesign.org.
