Environment Omaha Energy Seminar June 10
June 01, 2009
How are local and national entities dealing with the issue of energy production and consumption? That question is the subject of an energy seminar set for Wednesday, June 10, in Omaha. The event, sponsored by Environment Omaha, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Durham Museum, 801 S. 10th St.
On Nov. 6, 2008, city officials and Omaha by Design launched Environment Omaha, a multi-year initiative that will result in the creation of an Environmental Element for Omaha’s master plan. Five major content areas are being addressed – the natural environment, urban form & transportation, building construction, resource conservation and community health. Each area has an advisory committee charged with helping develop content for the initiative.
The energy seminar is designed to provide members of the five Environment Omaha Advisory Committees with an overview of local energy policies and sustainability initiatives as well as national and global perspectives on the issue. The agenda will include presentations by representatives from the Omaha Public Power District and the Metropolitan Utilities District, Omaha’s main energy providers, and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). The RMI – an independent, entrepreneurial, nonprofit organization that fosters the efficient and restorative use of resources to make the world secure, just, prosperous and life-sustaining – is serving as a project consultant for Environment Omaha. The seminar is also open to the general public.
Funding for Environment Omaha, which is receiving significant city staff and resource support, is provided by grants from the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District, the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency and the City of Omaha’s Stormwater Management Plan Program Grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.
