PUBLIC COMMENT SOUGHT ON FIRST SECTION OF ENVIRONMENT OMAHA
OMAHA – Public comment is sought on the first section of Environment Omaha, a collaborative effort designed to address the sustainability of the city in a comprehensive manner. The final draft of the natural environment document is available for review at www.environmentomaha.com, and members of the public can leave their comments at www.environmentomaha.com/discussion.
On Nov. 6, 2008, city officials and Omaha by Design launched Environment Omaha, a multi-year initiative that is creating an Environmental Element for the city’s master plan. Environment Omaha is addressing five major content areas – the natural environment, urban form and transportation, building construction, resource conservation and community health.
The natural environment document focuses on seven components – land, visual resources, natural habitats and wildlife, urban landscapes and habitats, air and climate, the acoustic environment and water. The draft document was developed by the Natural Environment Advisory Committee, which was chaired by Dave Ciaccio of Community Redesigned. The committee, a group of 23 volunteers representing a diversity of professions and perspectives, considered suggestions from the public in developing the content. The document was then reviewed by the Environment Omaha Core Committee.
Funding for Environment Omaha, which is receiving significant city staff and resource support, is provided by grants from the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District, the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency and the City of Omaha’s Stormwater Management Plan Program Grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Services.
