Step Up Award
The Neighborhood Center is the recipient of a 2009 Step Up Award from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). Created by UNO Chancellor John Christensen, the award recognizes individuals and groups of faculty, staff, students and community supporters who, in the last year, volunteered to take on and complete unexpected university-related work that went above and beyond the scope of their normal responsibilities. The Neighborhood Center was recognized for expanding its outreach efforts to Council Bluffs.
Ice Rink Schedule at ConAgra
In conjunction with the 2009 Holiday Lights Festival, the ConAgra Foods Ice Rink at 10th and Harney will be open Saturday, Dec. 12, through Thursday, Dec. 31, according to the following schedule:
- Sunday through Thursday, 1:00 to 10:00pm
- Friday-Saturday, 1:00pm to midnight
- Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, 1:00 to 5:00pm
- Closed Christmas

Ice Rink Action at UNMC
The new skating rink at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), part of the student plaza, was dedicated in ceremonies held Dec. 4. The rink, which is 5,500 square feet and can hold up to 130 skaters at a time, is open to the public through Feb. 28. It was made possible by a gift from Omaha philanthropists Ruth and Bill Scott. The rink will be open from weekdays from 4:00 to 8:00pm, Saturdays from 10:00am to 8:00pm, and Sundays from noon to 8:00pm. Admission is free for UNMC students, $4 for employees and their relatives, $4 for children age 12 and under, and $6 for adults. Skate rental is $3. The rink is located between the UNMC College of Pharmacy and the Sorrell Center.
2010 Neighborhood Builders
The 2010 edition of Neighborhood Builders is set for four Saturdays in February at the Neighborhood Center, 115 S. 49th Ave. The goal of the training – led by the Neighborhood Center, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha by Design, neighborhood associations, businesses, foundations and private citizens – is to help build stronger, healthier neighborhoods in Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawattamie counties by assisting in developing positive leadership. Class size is limited, and those who have not previously attended will be given first consideration. The registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 22.
