Harte Block Project in Dundee

Preserving and maintaining our architectural heritage has always been a link to our past and who we are. For 83 years Carl S. Baum Druggists, the oldest continually operated business in Dundee has served the community from the ground floor of the Harte Block building at 50th and Underwood.
|
|
|
The building has long been an icon of the Dundee neighborhood. It’s an important component of the Dundee and Happy Hollow neighborhood’s status on the
Historic District National Register of Historic Places.

Now the venerable old drugstore will move its files down the street to Woehlner’s to make way for a $1,000,000 renovation restoration project. The 1912 structure will undergo a comprehensive restoration featuring new commercial space and four upscale apartments above.

Renovation will begin in August 2005 and, the Alley Poyner Architect’s plan will feature the return of the original second entry from Underwood and the large size display windows on the storefront. Trim, moldings and high ceilings will be restored and incorporated wherever possible.

The second floor plan calls for maintaining the historic values of the building while offering the latest in modern conveniences in four apartments. Units will feature state-of-the-art kitchens, fireplaces, new windows, ceramic tile and carpets.
Consistent with the Urban Design Element of the City’s Master Plan, the Harte Block’s renovation manifests the recommendation that existing buildings be recognized as a potential resource to be preserved as heritage, and useful parts of the City’s built environment.
