Progress Report
In 2004, the City of Omaha unanimously adopted the Urban Design Element for the City of Omaha Master Plan.  The Element outlined goals in three distinct categories: Green Omaha, Neighborhood Omaha and Civic Omaha.  Upon its passage, Omaha by Design and City of Omaha Departments outlined a 2005 Program of Work to prioritize the implementation the Urban Design Element’s recommendations.  Priority Green Omaha goals include a Green Streets Master Plan, expansion of the trail system, and Papio Creek Watershed Plan.
Green Streets Master Plan
The City of Omaha Parks and Recreation Department hired RDG Planning & Design to prepare a Green Streets Master Plan for the City of Omaha.  The Green Streets Master Plan will identify streets appropriate for greening projects, set planting standards for specific street types and outline a maintenance plan for existing and future plantings.  Omaha by Design is assisting in the process and is part of the working committee guiding the Master plan.   The Working Committee is in the process of identifying and evaluating Omaha street types for greening options.  Some of the basic street types under consideration are: multi-lane divided, multilane undivided, 2 – 3 lane arterials, boulevards and neighborhood collectors.  When this process is complete, the plan will create designs for a specific Omaha street that can serve as a prototype for all streets of that type.  The Master Plan is expected to be complete in Spring 2006.
