In 2003, Place Game participants recommended that planters would be a great complement to security renovations and bring color and greenery to the Omaha Douglas Civic Center’s Harney Plaza.
Omaha by Design applied to the Affiliated Family Foundations for a grant to make improvements to the Plaza and the planters were installed and planted. Keep Omaha Beautiful has taken on the role of maintaining this great addition to Omaha’s public space.
The planting is funded by Keep Omaha Beautiful’s Pennies for Wild Flowers program. Local retailers like Crane Coffee and Wild Oats have placed the Pennies for Wild Flowers boxes near cash registers, so that customers can donate their change.
Cindy Smilley, Keep Omaha Beautiful Executive Director has been busy maintaining the planters. “We don’t get out of our office too often to actually get in the dirt, so we love it,” she said, “I was just out there and picked the gum and cigarette butts out, and with all the nice rain they are doing pretty well.”
