Joslyn Castle Neighborhood Association
and Saint Cecilia Parish 40th Street Project

The Destination Midtown Study of 2004 was justifiably proud of the areas significant landmarks like St. Cecilia Cathedral and the Joslyn Castle along 40th street.   The street has a ceremonial feel and functions as a "community" street.

Destination Midtown identified three initiatives to enhance the district:

  1. Pedestrian streetscape improvements along 40th Street from Dodge to Cuming Streets

  2. Improvements to the 40th and Davenport Intersection

  3. Saint Cecilia Cathedral Centennial Plaza.
Joslyn Castle Neighborhood Association and The Saint Cecilia Parish have come together to make these initiatives a reality.  The two institutions are leading the formulation of a coalition of stakeholders in the area to pursue these improvements, including Joslyn Castle Institute, St. Barnabus Church, the neighborhood associations in Midtown, concerned individuals, as well as endorsements from interested businesses and institutions.

Saint Cecilia Cathedral Centennial Plaza
St. Cecilia Parish will undertake the proposed Saint Cecilia Cathedral Centennial Plaza, to be built on 40th Street, directly west of the front door of the Cathedral. The plaza is to be dedicated in 2007 to celebrate the Cathedral's centennial.

The plaza (above) will be a magnificent new outdoor gathering space for the neighborhood, a destination for visitors and a new venue for outdoor events and festivals. The plaza will feature decorative paving, ornamental landscaping, stone planters, custom street lights, donor wall colonnade, Spanish Steps, stone benches, and a major civic bronze sculpture of St. Cecilia, Patron Saint of Music and the Arts.

40th Street, Dodge Street to Cuming Street
The Joslyn Castle Neighborhood Association is working to enhancement the pedestrian experience along 40th Street, from Dodge Street to Cuming Street. Using the street’s historic architecture a "Street of Landmarks", will be created with Joslyn Castle, St. Barnabas Church, and St Cecilia Cathedral as historic anchor attractions.

Improvements along 40th Street also include pedestrian-friendly amenities such as decorative lamp-posts on limestone bases, ornamental landscaping with trees, shrubs & flowers, limestone benches, traffic-calming "bump-outs" at intersections to create pedestrian refuges, as well as stone and brick paved sidewalks and crosswalks.

The intersection of 40th and Davenport, the corner near the Joslyn Castle and St. Barnabas Church, will become a second "plaza" space to complement the St. Cecilia plaza. Limestone wing-walls will be installed at the gateway intersections of 40th & Dodge, and at 40th & Cuming, to identify the entrance to the "Street of Landmarks."
