“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
– Greek proverb
Omahans have long revered their green space. It’s a relationship that dates back to the city’s early days when renowned landscape architect Horace W. Cleveland developed a boulevard system linking Omaha’s major central city parks. This system did more than link green with green. It underscored the importance of the natural environment as an ingredient of urban society, a communal asset with the potential to help shape the future of its people.
Green Omaha, one of Omaha by Design’s four areas of emphasis, seeks to preserve and enhance the city’s natural setting and public park system. Green Omaha projects are an opportunity for today’s public, private and philanthropic leaders to assume the mantle of leadership for Omaha’s green future. Although specific in nature, they collectively build upon the system concept introduced by Mr. Cleveland those many years ago, providing residents from all sectors of the city with access to the green space that serves as a vital counterbalance to the heat and light of an expanding urban environment.
