11th Street & Farnam Area

This intersection has significant potential as a link to th e Holland Performing Arts Center and Convention Center/Arena. The Place Game team also saw the Arch at the entrance to the Gene Leahy Mall as potential gathering and socializing place.

However, the area is also seen as a concrete jungle and not very pedestrian friendly. Lack of traffic control, poor street maintenance, the absence of trees and blank building walls added to this perception.

Short Term

Entrances can be great gathering places

The team suggested several actions that could be undertaken to quickly improve the space. They include:

  • Painting crosswalk and street strips to control traffic.
  • Remove wall on the north side of Farnam to improve visibility and safety in the Gene Leahy Mall.
  • Add planters and trees to extend the Leahy Mall's feel into intersection.
  • Add a Mural and Street Art.
  • Stage activities in the area with an art walk, and expand Old Market concept down 11th to Farnam

Long Term

A pedestrian bridge in Denmark

In the long term, the team recommended:

  • Build Bridge and Pedestrian link across Leahy Mall to connect 11th to the Holland Performing Arts Center and Convention Center/Arena
  • Add median to calm traffic.
  • Extend "String of Pearls" or historic lights to the area.
