11th Street & Harney Area
The cobblestone
streets and historic architecture give the area a period feel.
The team appreciated the mix of businesses and residences
and easy access to the Gene Leahy Mall.
Participants observed that the bare concrete
parking lots and unmarked pedestrian crossings detracted from
the intersection. Buffers between cars and people both on
the street and in the parking lots and a lack of places that
engage people and encourage socializing are not present.
Short Term
- Pull art from the Artist's Co-op and place it on block
in the lots for public view.
- Add people / child friendly climbable sculptures.
Long Term
- Add historic horse trough for police and carriage horses.
- Add pocket park to parking lots.
- Security issue - 24 hour security patrol in the Old Market.
- Add round planters to continue Howard Street theme to
each intersection.
- Extend cobblestones all along 11th Street.
- Add retro lights all along the street from Farnam to Leavenworth
- like 10th Street bridge.
