11th Street & Leavenworth Area
The area is seen as having tremendous potential
with good access, lots of open space and interesting views
of downtown, the Butternut Building and the Missouri River
Bridge. The team liked the mix of architectural scale and
mass present in the area.
The heavy traffic and lack of traffic controls made the intersection
unpleasant. The area is unkempt, messy and isolated with no
sense of connection to the Old Market.
Short Term
-
Place a public market at the southern edge.
-
Add Signage, Benches, and Plants.
-
Reinforce the Bemis with sculpture spots/nodes with a
large rotating sculpture garden - 30' high 60'
-
Clean up the area.
-
Stop signs at intersection to calm traffic.
Long Term
-
Encourage destination restaurants, retail and art businesses.
-
Stage "Outdoor" cinema on Johnson Hardware Building,
i.e. Jazz on the Green, "Movies on the Lot"
-
Construct "Spanish Steps" with mixed use at
the top of the hill with overlooks.
-
Move parking lots from the interior to the edge with incorporated
mixed use
