ACT!vate Omaha encourages Omahan’s to become more active by utilizing features of the built environment that promote activity; such as bike trails, parks, city gardens, walking paths, skate parks and many more. Omaha is one of 25 cities that received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Active Living by Design program to promote “active living”, a process that incorporates physical activity into our daily lives.
The mission of ACT!vate Omaha is to create awareness, advocacy and excitement about activity and the importance of designing our community for active lifestyles.
To set a baseline to measure progress toward its goals ACT!vate Omaha conducted a random sample survey that found three out of ten people in our community aren’t yet ready to make time for daily activity.
-
More than 6 out of 10 people report a positive view of Omaha as a place to be active.
-
85% say their neighborhood is a good place to be active.
-
Safety is generally not an obstacle to neighborhood activity.
-
More than 6 out of 10 people have explored parts of Omaha on foot in the last three years.
-
6 out 10 have been to downtown Omaha to do something physically active in the last three years.
-
More than 8 out of 10 have used a city park for active recreation in the last 3 years.
-
More than 6 out of 10 have used a city trail for active recreation in the last 3 years.
While the usage survey is positive, it is clear that our community has plenty of room to increase daily activity. The goal shared by ACT!vate Omaha and some 30 community groups including Omaha by Design is to encourage people to get out, get moving and explore our community on a regular basis!
