Prairie Preservation
We learn about it in school and read about it in the books by Nebraska authors, but few of us have ever seen our native landscape as Lewis and Clark or Mari Sandoz did. The Glacier Creek Project means to change that by preserving several hundred acres of prairie located within 30 minutes of Downtown Omaha.

The Project's objective is to establish a significant Omaha-area tallgrass prairie, representative of our natural heritage and visually and physically isolated from adjacent development by watershed-defined boundaries that is available for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

Consistent with the Goals of Green Omaha , [hotlink to Green Omaha background] the preserve will provide watershed management for the Big Papillion Creek, and a connection to Papio-Missouri River Natural Resource District Trails.

The project aims to include educational opportunities in an environmental study center with demonstration plots and an historic barn conference center and natural history exhibit area.

The Glacier Creek Coalition was formed in 1999 under the leadership of the University of Nebraska at Omaha in association with Omaha area leaders in natural resources, education, and private enterprise to establish the 500 acre preserve. The proposed area will include UNO’s 160 acre Alwine Prairie and an additional 340 acres that encompass the Glacier Creek Watershed situated north of
144
th and State Street.

When Lewis and Clark visited this area, more than 95% of the landscape was tallgrass prairie.   Today our native habitat is only seen in small isolated pockets that cannot replicate the true nature of the expansive dynamic prairie that is our natural heritage.

The Glacier Creek project will be a way to experience the prairie as it was for centuries and to insure an understanding of our plains heritage for generations to come.
