Hearty container plantings
you can use in your neighborhood

In 2003, with a grant from the Parker Family Foundation, Lively Omaha and the Public Building Commission implemented the results of the Place Game at Civic Center Harney Plaza.

Lively Omaha brought color and comfort to the lower Harney Street Plaza by replacing the concrete jersey barriers with planters filled with prairie flowers. The planters are an example of how to create a significant improvement to a public space with a minimum of cost and maintenance while still providing the security required by public buildings

The combinations of plants, selected by David Werner of Big Muddy Workshop and Kathleen Cue of the Douglas County Extension Office, are designed to ensure survival with minimum maintenance.  All plants are drought resistant and can withstand extreme temperatures. Civic Center employees have volunteered to perform on-going maintenance so the planters continue to beautify the plaza for seasons to come.

The Harney Plaza project is intended to serve as a model for planter selection, soil mixture and native perennial plants. The specifics are presented here for use by any group that wishes to use container plantings to improve the public spaces in their neighborhoods.
