Farnam Plaza

The area offers open space and good visual lines and acts as a connector between Farnam Street and the Civic Center entrances. The Place Game team felt the plaza has lots of potential and some liked the sculpture while others were less enthusiastic about it.

The plaza seemed empty and deficient in seating, shade and trash receptacles. They observed that lighting was inadequate, maintenance was needed on paving bricks and the existing art works didn’t seem to work well together. There was concern about use of the plazas after hours by skaters and skateboards.

Short Term
The team suggested several actions that could be undertaken to quickly improve the space. They include:

  • Erect a canopy over entrance.
  • Install outdoor furniture for seating, eating and working.
  • Add plants and shrubs to provide more color and
    soften features.
  • Put in trees and umbrellas to shade seating
    and other areas.
  • Encourage vendors to provide food and other services.

Long Term
In the long term the team recommended:

  • Add a water feature that can be touched
    sat upon or in.
  • Place art, murals or plants to break
up effect of the bare walls
  • Have programming on a regular basis
such as family attractions, concerts and
    other activities
  • Develop a plan for skaters to increase
security or divert them to other location.
