Group 4 - Dodge Street from 10th to 13th Streets

What the Place Game Team Liked Best

The group liked the mix of historic and contemporary architecture and the “main street” feel. They also saw lots of potential for a pedestrian connection to the Old Market and 11th Street.

What Could Be Improved

The team saw 11th Street as too wide and not pedestrian friendly with traffic moving too fast and a lack of signage. They felt the street needs benches, lights, and retail and disliked the blank walls of Vlasic and the parking garages.

Short Term

  • Install signage indicating area attractions.
  • Plant vegetation to enhance landscape.
  • Add graphics and/or sculpture to the Hilton garage.
  • Provide benches for seating.
  • Narrow 11th Street at Douglas and Dodge to encourage pedestrians.
  • Add traffic calming devices like the Old Market planters to give 11th more of a boulevard feel.
  • Give this area a name such as “River District”.
  • Add connector transit for pedestrians such as Retro Buses.

Long Term

  • Implement lighting that is a “signature” for that district like those in the Old Market.
  • Add a movie theatre, market, or grocery in vacant lot.
  • Improve Dodge north at 11th and 12th Street by using the flat parking lot for shopping, dining, seating, and residential uses.
  • Improve Public Transportation with a connector system or circulator.
  • Slow traffic by reducing the number of lanes on Dodge, 10th, and Douglas.
