Kiwanis Park Reclaimed!
Kiwanis park, located at Locust and Abbott Drive, is a successful
land reclamation project spearheaded by Downtown Kiwanis to
improve our community and rally members.
Contributors include City, State and federal government.
Over the years, Omaha Kiwanians have contributed more than
$40,000 for design and maintenance, and countless hours of
sweat equity.
"Neglected" is perhaps the kindest description today of Kiwanis
Park, which thousands of people pass every day on their way
to Eppley Airfield. The "Downtown" Kiwanis Club,
which partnered with federal and local government 30 years
ago to create the park, has a better idea. Many refer to the
beautifully landscaped double row of old-fashioned globe lights
along Abbott Drive as Omaha's "string of pearls."
Kiwanians see a redeveloped Kiwanis Park as another jewel
on the necklace -- a living, lasting legacy to the Kiwanis
ideal.
Waterfront pavilion is the heart of
the park.
Imagine:
U.S., Nebraska, Iowa,
Kiwanis International flags rippling overhead
Colorful plaza with covered shelter
Great to sit, talk, gaze back at city skyline
Leads to cottonwood picnic grove and Carter Lake
Sculpture garden to emphasize Kiwanis dedication to
bettering
children's lives
