Group 1 – Main Floor

What the Place Game Team Liked Best

Participants liked the atrium, the Books ‘n’ Beans coffee shop and the view to the east looking out on the Gene Leahy Mall. They also enjoyed the staggered, nontraditional arrangement of shelving in the Children’s area.

What Could Be Improved

The team found that the main floor had too many physical obstacles to movement and was visually cluttered. They thought the information kiosk was intrusive and that signage and seating are inadequate.

Short Term

  • Open up entire main floor for informal seating, reading, and discussion.
  • Make seating areas more prominent and comfortable.
  • Combine the information kiosk and circulation desk.
  • Add murals to the back wall of the children’s area
  • Repaint raised collection signage on upper floors to improve visibility
  • Paint the walls in lighter colors.
  • Improve computer access and add computers

Long Term
  • Add an open stairwell into the airspace from floor to floor.
  • Move children’s area to another floor to separate it from the young adult section.
  • Include gift, flower, bookshops or other kiosks around the perimeter.
  • Visually lighten the walkways and bridges, perhaps with glass
  • Change glazing to allow visitors to see into the building and view activities.
  • Redesign and repaint the main floor, adding artwork to foyers.
  • Add informal seating in the atrium.
  • Add more plants.
