Metropolitan Community College – South Campus Place Game

Metropolitan Community College is entering an exciting new phase in its development of services for the Omaha area. In addition to implementing a vast array of new programs to meet the demand of the region’s economy the institution launched a master planning process in the spring of 2002.

MCC engaged Sasaki and Associates of Watertown Massachusetts to evaluate existing facilities, plan for growth and develop a clear identity for each of its 3 campuses. At the South Omaha site, plans include the creation of an Applied Technology Institute and Health Careers Institute. New construction on the campus will make it a focal point for South Omaha with integration of a Metro Area Transit bus hub and a shared public library to be built by both the College and the City of Omaha.

To help plan for this new public space, Lively Omaha joined with Metropolitan Community College, Metro Area Transit (MAT) and the Omaha Public Library for A Place Game, on October 30, 2003 at the Industrial Technology Building. CEO’s of all the participating organizations provided their own visions for the space and Lively Omaha Facilitators lead 4 teams in observation and brainstorming sessions.

Several major themes emerged from the session. Those themes are presented in the link below followed by the observations and recommendations of each of the Place Game Teams.

Emerging Themes

Specific short-term and long-term improvement ideas were developed by each team for all the sites visited. Their concepts for each segment of the South Omaha Campus are presented here. Web site visitors are encouraged to make comments and suggestions on the Place Game ideas.

Group 1 - New Library Site – Current Parking Lot

Group 2 - New Canopy/Transit Center – Current Embankment

Group 3 - ITC Building Area

Group 4 – Mahoney Building Area

In addition to improvement ideas, Place Game participants came up with organizations and groups that might be interested in becoming partners to help implement their place making suggestions.
